Communication 'critical' for sales managers

It is essential that sales managers focus on communication if they are to boost employee motivation, one sector body has noted.

Petra Wilton, director of policy and research at the Chartered Management Institute, said that employee engagement can be the key to productivity and sales managers are often given the task of ensuring staff are suitably motivated.

His comments follow the release of a report by Aviva, which showed that many employees "suffer in silence" rather than admit health concerns to their boss, with only four per cent of workers approaching their manager about a problem.

"Certainly there are a range of different interventions that you can do to try and rebuild the communications and employee moral across the company - away days, business planning or strategy days," Ms Wilton suggested.

She added that sales managers who create a sense of community can benefit from increased output and more positive attitudes, which will boost the organisation as a whole.
