Sales managers 'must have strong leadership skills'
Strong leadership skills are essential if sales managers are to be successful in their roles, one expert has observed.
Tina Lamb, senior partner at development organisation the Impact Factory, said that there is currently a culture of people becoming "accidental managers" without having the necessary skills to organise and lead their team, and this needs to be addressed.
Her comments follow the publication of a report by the Chartered Management Institute, which revealed that over half of managers misjudge their strengths in the workplace, with over two-thirds even claiming they had no desire to become a manager when they embarked on their current role.
Ms Lamb suggested that sometimes the reason for this is that people show great capability in certain aspects of their work and get promoted as a result.
She explained: "People forget that with most types of promotions you need the skills needed for the people side of things - that aren't to do with the actual business."
