Immigration caps 'need careful consideration'

Workers with specialist skills needed in roles, like sales jobs, should not be held back by a cap on immigrants from outside the European Economic Area, according to an expert.

Commenting on the issue, Kevin Green, chief executive of the REC, said that the proposal could make it harder for companies using sales recruitment to find the experts they need.

"There were huge skills shortages before the recession and if the private sector is to grow rapidly out of recession, it will need skilled workers to do so. An artificial cap on immigration will affect business growth and delivery of core services," he said.

The expert added that the UK could train young people up to fill the skills gap, but conceded that this will take time to do.

Mr Green recently said that the Queen's Speech should have buoyed the entire recruitment community, because he thinks scrapping the planned rises in national insurance contributions is a move that will "delight" the sector.
