Caterpillar keeps climbing

One of the UK's largest and well-known manufacturing firms is looking for more staff after a surge in sales and the relocation of some of its production.

Caterpillar, which is known for its plant vehicles, plans to recruit a further 300 workers to its Leicestershire base after production of one of its popular diggers was transferred to Britain from the US.

General manager Robert Droogleever revealed that around 80 per cent of the roles will be on the shop floor, while the remaining 20 per cent will be a mix of administerial and sales jobs.

David Sprason, a Conservative councillor in Desford, said: "It's great to see Caterpillar coming back after a deep recession."

Martin Traynor, managing director of Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce, told the Leicester Mercury that the new jobs are excellent news.

More manufacturers could be looking to fill sales jobs after the Chartered Institute for Purchasing and Supply revealed exporter confidence had reached its highest point since 1996 in April.
