Clothes count at sales jobs interviews

Taking your clothes up a notch for interview for sales jobs will pay dividends, according to one expert who said being casual or provocative is not a good idea.

Michael Erwin, a senior career adviser for CareerBuilder.com, told the Charlotte Observer that people attending sales jobs interviews should ring the company in advance to double check what attire will be suitable for the occasion.

He told the newspaper: "Work culture is more relaxed than it was years ago, but you still want to take it one step up. You don't want to show up not wearing a suit and the person who's interviewing you is in a suit."

Avoiding showing cleavage and toes is also recommended by the employment expert, who said when a candidate gets into the sales job they may be able to wear more casual clothes but for the interview being smart must take priority over comfort.

Female candidates for sales jobs are more likely to fall victim to a fashion faux-pas, according to recruitment expert Ann Israel, who told Law.com that time should be taken in order to create a professional look.
