Sales job workers would rather cut salary than colleagues

Written by Paul Goatman

A number of people in sales jobs would rather take a pay cut than see their colleagues go out of work, a new survey shows.

The research from outplacement specialists Rialto has found more than half of staff would rather take the reduction, with experts saying this method is more cost effective for the company too.

Richard Chiumento, chief executive officer at Rialto, said it saves firms money to cut sales job salaries by five per cent rather than make five per cent of the staff redundant.

"In the current recession, people are being forced to think more creatively about how to retain talented staff in the long term whilst riding this relatively short period of economic turbulence," he added.

The expert said that smart firms will capitalise on this opportunity to team build those in sales jobs, as the entire workforce is likely to feel a sense of community and will pull together.

However, Alex Paterson, founder of Check4Jobs.com, recently said that online recruitment will see a surge in the second half of the year, meaning companies may be recovering.
