Leadership training 'neglected'

Many young professional leaders in the UK are being overlooked by their employers, it has been revealed.

A survey of 1,200 people by career development organisation Common Purpose indicated that less that half of people receive leadership development before the age of 25, despite over half of respondents saying they had wanted the training at a younger age.

Julia Middleton, chief executive of the company, said the imbalance should be redressed because organisations and society require more young people prepared and able to stand up as leaders.

"You have to learn to lead young because it's a bumpy ride, you inevitably get it right and wrong for a long time, and you have to be able to bounce back, forgive yourself and keep going," she added.

Last week, the Public Sector People Managers' Association and the Improvement Development Agency for Local Government announced it will launch a set of guidelines for public sector managers next month to allow human resources directors to check their competencies against an 'ideal skills set'.
