Companies 'looking internally to employ managers'

Firms should look within their own company when looking to employ management-level staff, it has been claimed.

According to Sally Toumi, managing director of recruitment consultancy Stark Brooks, many businesses used to look externally for management-level people but organisations are increasingly looking internally to find the right person for the job.

"We are finding that a number of businesses now recognise that there isn't necessarily the right candidate externally and it is about looking at who they have internally and giving those people the opportunity first," she added.

Ms Toumi went on to say this policy is not necessarily influenced by the current uncertain economic climate and astute enterprises have been applying the strategy for some time.

Research released by market research company GfK NOP in May this year suggested 17 per cent of UK employees intend to leave their current position as soon as the opportunity arises, while a further 12 per cent plan to change jobs within the next twelve months.
