Time for manufacturing investment, says union

The government should increase investment in new apprenticeships and on-the-job skills development in the manufacturing sector, it has been claimed.

According to union Unite, the country's manufacturing base should be boosted to aid economic recovery after the credit crunch.

Joint general secretary of the organisation Derek Simpson blamed the current manufacturing malaise on Conservative policies in the 1980s.

"It's high time for the resurgence of British manufacturing but we need an industrial strategy from the government to support and nurture the UK's manufacturing base," he added.

Mr Simpson went on to say the UK has lost one million manufacturing jobs and now significant investment in apprentices and training is required to rebuild British manufacturing.

Earlier this month, the government announced plans to create 10,000 new apprenticeship places.

Skills secretary John Denham estimated one in five of all young people will be undertaking an apprenticeship by the end of the next decade.
