Manual handling training 'necessary lessen injury'
Manual handling training is vital for workers in the manufacturing and industrial sectors, it has been claimed.
Jill Joyce, senior policy and technical adviser for the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, said such instruction is vital because two-fifths of employee injuries causing absence from work for over three days are caused by handling, lifting or carrying.
She added: "If you can cut down on these, that cuts down on a lot of absence from work which is of course is expensive for employers."
Ms Joyce went on to say the four points that need to be taken into account when teaching people about manual handling are the task being carried out, individual physique, the size and type of the load and the surrounding environment.
Earlier this week, Karl Monahan, On Site Massage Company's business development manager, claimed those who work in jobs which involve spending a large amount of time sitting at a desk, such as people in print sales jobs, face a range of potential health problems.
