Gov't launches job engagement review

A review concentrating on boosting the performance of workers such as those in sales jobs has been launched by a government department.

John Hutton, the business secretary, claims the project will examine worker engagement in the hope of boosting British business performance.

He claims engagement is often derided as a buzzword but says the links between good policy and improved performance are well established.

"Research suggests engaged employees perform better and stay in their jobs longer," Mr Hutton states.

By identifying how successful companies engage with their workers, the business secretary intends to encourage these behaviours in other firms and increase retention of staff such as those holding sales jobs.

Expert on the field David MacLeod claims there is a large potential for improved performance in this area, as fewer than a sixth of employees consider themselves sufficiently engaged with their jobs.

Martyn Sloman, learning and development advisor at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, said earlier this month training is essential as it gives staff the opportunity to fully deploy their abilities.
