Employers unaware of employer benefits contribution

Only two per cent of British workers appreciate their employer's investment in their benefits, new research has shown.

According to a survey by employment and pensions consulting firm Aon Consulting, 98 per cent of employees are unaware of the benefits contribution their employer makes.

Figures suggest that an employer will spend anywhere between 20 and 40 per cent in benefits as a percentage of an employee's salary.

Gareth Ashley-Jones, head of flexible benefits at Aon Consulting, suggested that employers could be underselling themselves in key areas, such as their sales recruitment.

He told Online Recruitment: "[Companies] must do more to get the message across that benefits should be taken seriously as an important and indeed very substantial part of remuneration package."

The survey suggested that more than two thirds of employees thought that companies invested no more than ten per cent of their individual salary on benefits.

However, Peter Reilly, director of HR research at the Institute of Employment Studies (IES), recently claimed that cash is far better than benefits in the current financial climate.
