Firms spend £38 million on skills training

Companies forked out a total of £38 billion on skills training for employees last year, according to the National Employer Skills Survey 2007.

The number of vacancies unable to be filled because of skills shortages, such as technical sales recruitment, also decreased by four per cent compared to 2005.

Around 79,000 employers were interviewed for the Learning and Skills Council's study, which found the average spent on skills training per employee has increased by 11 per cent to £1,750 in 2007 compared to £1,550 in 2005.

According to skills secretary John Denham, skills are a key priority for business, from low level sales jobs to sales director jobs, as the UK faces "increasing competition from across the globe".

He added: "It is vital for everyone - businesses, employees and government - to work together to ensure we have the skills we need to succeed."

Underlining the growing emphasis on skills, e-skills UK has published a consultation on its five year strategy to ensure the UK market remains competitive in the global skills market.
