Sales managers fear flexible working

Long-in-the-tooth sales managers fear their sales jobs are at risk from the widespread introduction of a flexible working policy, it has been revealed.

According to Philip Flaxton, chief executive of Work Wise UK, many line managers across all industries fear that flexible working could make their sales job role redundant.

At a discussion chaired by BT, Mr Flaxton stated: "They have the attitude: If we empower people to work flexibly, how long before we are no longer needed?"

The biggest fear seems to be that changes could eventually result in there being no need for the sales recruitment of sales manager jobs at all.

Some 70 per cent of staff employed by BT choose to work flexibly while a further 13 per cent are home-based.

However, Caroline Walker, director of people and policy of BT added that: "Human resources should be telling managers that they have a status because they deliver a service, not because they tell people what to do."
